NI NO KUNI II TRICKS
CONTROL ROLAND
The game starts with you controlling Roland, but soon switches over to Evan after Chapter. For the time being, don’t take the game’s recommendation. While Evan is certainly more the main character than Roland, Roland starts with a much higher physical attack and defense than Evan does. This makes his damage output higher than Evan’s in the early game, while simultaneously making it safer to get into enemies’ faces and hack away.
DISTRIBUTE EQUIPMENT EVENLY AND MANAGE WEAPON SWITCHING
Both Roland and Evan equip swords, and it’s tempting to pile all your goo swords onto your active character (Roland, if you are following this guide.) This is a bad strategy.
Instead, pick your best sword, and give it to the character you control the most and give your second best swords to the other. Then alternate back and forth as you get better swords.
The only real reason to switch weapons (aside from taking advantage of elemental affinities and status effects) is to use up their Zing gauges. Attacking with any weapon fills all three Zing gauges, so you should always be attacking with a weapon with high strength, and then switching to a full Zing weapon to use special abilities. As such, you want each character to have a primary weapon that can do lots of damage, instead of one character hoarding them all.
We recommend using manual weapon switching for this reason. Automatic and semi-automatic will switch you to weapons with full zing gauges, even if they have lower attack. You should only be doing this when you are ready to use a special skill.
GRIND UNTIL YOU GET EQUIPMENT THAT INCREASES DROP RATES
This is the core of what we like to call the avalanche strategy. Equipment drops are generated semi-randomly, so there’s a chance that you might get a piece of equipment that increases the drop rate of more equipment early in the game. This is what you are looking for.
Fight literally everything you see in the early game, until you get something that increases equipment drop rate and equip it. Then do it again. Two or three pieces of equipment with this ability should do. At this point you should notice that nearly every battle gets you a few pieces of equipment, and every couple of battles will get you equipment or rare or higher value.
Not only will this keep your party consistently equipped with the best gear without ever requiring them to visit a shop, it will also make you filthy rich. Equipment sells for more money than would normally be rewarded by a random battle, so selling your junk equipment will give you all the money you could possibly want.
This strategy only gets more fruitful if you can find pieces of equipment that have the EXP up, Money up or Material up abilities, which will give you an even larger bonus when you start building your kingdom.
This is called the avalanche strategy because your power increases at a faster and faster rate over time. Once you get your first drop-up piece of equipment, it will be easier to find your second, third and so on.
FOCUS ON THE SPOILS SECTION OF THE TACTIC TWEAKER
When you unlock the tactic tweaker, you will suddenly be able to unlock a ton of bonuses for battle. While it may be tempting to dump all your points into doing more damage, you should really focus on the spoils section first. This section governs your rewards after battle.
First, unlock the two tweakers that allow you to boost your EXP instead of cash or materials. More EXP means more frequent level ups, and level ups are what give you more points to unlock more tweakers.
Second, unlock the tweakers that focus on equipment drops instead of cash or materials. Once again, selling equipment will get you more money than increasing your money drop rate will. You also won’t need materials until you start building your kingdom, so for now focus on your strength alone. When your kingdom does come into play, you might need to change these tweakers around a bit, but for now, focusing on EXP and equipment drops is the way to go.
MOVING ON
Once again, this guide isn’t meant to keep you overpowered for the entirety of the game. However, by the time you unlock your kingdom, Roland should be able to kill most enemies that he encounters with one or two weak slashes. This will allow you to coast through most battles for the next few chapters.
That’s good because the next few chapters will introduce things like military battles, kingdom management and higgledy raising. For the next few chapters, focus on gaining materials and building up your kingdom. This will confer to you a number of passive boosts that will keep the avalanche rolling.
